Marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) encompasses a wide range of practices across blue water, coastal, and intertidal spaces – and promises scale and economy. Proponents are eyeing local waters owing to their mCDR compatibility and established marine research and industrial expertise.
In response, I co-founded the BC/WA mCDR community of exploration (BC/WA mCDR CoEx) with competitive grant funding from the Marine Environmental Observation Prediction & Response network (MEOPAR) – Canada’s premier marine risk and resilience research, training and knowledge mobilization non-profit.
The CoEx is dedicated to exploring responsible, inclusive, and evidence-based mCDR. It centres on British Columbia and Washington State, reflecting the interconnected nature of our coastal ocean ecosystems, shared governance responsibilities, and regional climate goals. The CoEx serves as a trusted forum for coordinated research, knowledge mobilization and co-production, and policy engagement. It elevates participants’ capacity to explore applied solutions that matter to them and broader society.
Over the coming months the CoEx and partners are convening several workshops to build a regional voice and develop roadmap(s) for responsible mCDR exploration. You can learn more about the CoEx here and join here.
